A simple, warming breakfast that I love on a cool morning. This dish helps to nourish and ground the body and to build ojas (immunity, strength, radiance).
Flax seeds are sattvic in nature, rich in Omega-3s. They balance the hormonal system and cholesterol levels, and help suppress the appetite, move the bowels and treat obesity. However, flax seeds can quickly go rancid once ground. I recommend buying them the whole seeds (not pre-ground), grind a week’s supply and store in the fridge. If you need to buy pre-ground, store them in the freezer.
- ¾ cup water
- 1 organic apple or pear
- 3 dried apricots, organic and unsulphured (you can also use other dried fruit, such as raisins, figs, etc. )
- ½ teaspoon real cinnamon powder
- ½ teaspoon clove powder
- A pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
- 10 almonds (optional to soak and peel overnight) or 1-2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
Place water in a small pot on the stove and bring to a boil. Add apple, apricots, spices and almonds and reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes. When cooked, remove from heat and add the flax seeds, and ghee . If you are using hemp seeds instead of almonds, add them at the end. You may need to add a little cool water if the flax seeds make your dish dry.
