About Briya

Briya (Rachel) Freeman has been facilitating courses in natural healing, meditation and stress reduction in both private and corporate settings since 2011. She is currently based in Ottawa, Canada.

Briya primarily draws her inspiration from her long-term mentorship under the guidance of Berdhanya Swami Tierra, a female mystic and shaman of South American origin, and from the science of ayurveda, a system of holistic medicine and self-care. She has over 10 years’ experience in the practice of yoga, meditation, ceremony and natural healing. Her work has been published in Ayurveda Mantra, an international magazine promoting natural health, yoga and higher awareness.

Briya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management (2006), studies in international business from l’Ecole Superieure de Commerce (Rouen, France, 2004), and studies in ayurveda (Anjali School of Ayurveda and Panchakarma, Kerala, India, 2012-2015),

From 2005 to 2016, Briya served in the Canadian public service with the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Since 2015, she has had the honour of serving as Berdhanya Swami Tierra’s Director of International Relations, and regularly supports her work by facilitating international courses, pilgrimages and retreats.

Briya has also contributed as an editor of several recent publications, including Mastering Reality: Ground Work for Inner Sovereignty (2017), Steps of the Seeker (2017), Artisans of the New Earth (2012) and The Altar of the Initiate (2012).

While Briya effectively conveys practical knowledge, this is always done with a joyful smile. Being very generous with her time, Briya is able to frame your thoughts and questions against a tremendous backdrop of experience. Working with Briya I have seen wonderful improvements. “Meditation with Briya is like being in the company of a very good friend who you haven’t seen in a long time. A patient friend, smiling, attentive and calm. That good friend breathes with you, stretches, laughs. That good friend has open arms and accepts you just the way you are. That good friend is… you.”

  1. Hi Bala,

I just took a peek here at your website. Interesting stuff. I also read that you were the editor of a book entitled: “Alter of the Initiate”. I clicked on the link to see the book but the link didn’t work. Do you happen to know where I’d be able to find/see a copy of this book? The blend of Celtic and Native concepts (e.g. “Celtive”, ha, ha!) with respect to Shamanism is intriguing to me. I wish to see how deep the book goes into our traditional “Ways of Knowing”.

    Shamanic Regards,

    Tim Yearington

    1. Hi Tim,
Thanks for your comments. Both of Matthew’s Books are published by Bilboa, and I think some Ottawa bookstores may carry them, including Chapters, but your best bet might be Amazon.ca:

They are quite unique contributions to the modern expression of shamanism, but I would be curious to hear what you think of them, given your experience as a teacher.
