Spirulina is a type of blue-green algea that tastes a lot like seaweed. It’s considered to be a superfood because it is incredibly high in protein and iron, as well as vitamins A, B and K, making it great for vegetarians. It is also known to promote healthy digestion and elimination, increases stamina and immunity, and to curb the appetite, assisting the maintenance of a healthy body weight.
I usually take my spirulina au naturel in a tall glass of water. For those a little more apprehensive about the taste, this smoothie is a more delicious option. This recipe is rejuvenating for the body and lungs, great for Vata and Kapha.
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp honey or 2 tsp maple syrup
- 1/4 tsp spirulina
- 2 tbsp flax seeds
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 tsp vanilla powder (optional)
Throw flax seeds in the blender with water and grind for a few minutes, until the seeds have broken down. Add the other ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Enjoy at room temperature.
